1949
Buckley Chapel opens as a mission effort of local Christian Reformed churches, led by missionary Albert Veen. Rooted in urban outreach, worship, and community engagement from day one.
1962
Buckley Chapel officially becomes Grace Christian Reformed Church. The name comes from Romans 5:1–2. The congregation builds a reputation as a racially diverse church committed to the city.
Late 1960s
During a period of civil unrest, Grace intentionally remains invested in its neighborhood — exploring new models of neighborhood engagement rather than relocating. A formative choice that defines our identity.
1984
Grace played an important role in conversations within the Christian Reformed Church regarding women serving as deacons and elders, and hosted the Christian Reformed Church Synod in Grand Rapids.
2022
Grace becomes an affirming congregation, welcoming LGBTQ+ members into the full life and leadership of the church.
2023
Pastor Kelsi Jones installed as Grace’s seventh pastor — ordained in the Reformed Church in America.
2025
Grace votes to leave the Christian Reformed Church, continuing its Reformed identity on its own terms.
2026
The congregation votes to adopt its current name: Grace Church on Buckley — honoring the location, the history, and our ongoing commitment to this neighborhood.
